The Parasol Protectorate Series. She just wasn't very active as a protagonist.
While the main character initially states to believe the opposite preferring a sense of independence and not caring for romancethe fact that she gakl eventually falls into those tropes undercut that initial character development. Third, she was rudely attacked by a vampire, breaking all standards of social etiquette. The love senses are brief.

Alexia Tarabotti is laboring under a great many social tribulations. No Quitting her husband's house and moving back in with her horrible family, Lady Maccon becomes the scandal of the London season. I wanted to ascertain if the oral presentation of the story would make a difference. Sold and delivered by Audible, an Amazon company. From bad to worse, apparently, for Alexia accidentally kills the vampire - and then the appalling Lord Maccon loud, messy, gorgeous, and werewolf is sent by Queen Victoria to investigate.
Once I got hooked by the story about 30 minutes in, I really enjoyed it. Free with Audible trial. I found it a refreshing read and a highly promising good start for this debut author.
I've been rather unwell for several months and everything I've been reading has done nothing to impress my mood. A chance to attend the exclusive Audyn School in Manhattan. The characters were fun and the mystery itself interesting, if slightly predictable.

Now, in all honesty, it does have it's share of hot, steamy naughtiness it is part romance when all is said and done, although it really has only one outright sex scene in the entire bookbut it doesn't read like every action our heroine is taking is trying to lead her to her next tryst; this is Victorian England, after all, and there are certain rules and regulations one must follow before such scandalous behavior can ensue!
With unexpected vampires appearing and expected vampires disappearing, everyone seems to believe Alexia responsible.
Too many interactions and discussions about their attractions or romantic formalities, with scenes mainly reduced to, "Oh Carriger on her prolific, detailed and hilarious story.

Soulless is the first book of the Parasol Protectorate series: First, she has no soul. Narration was done well.

My first favorite part is the carriber manner by which our leading lady handles the uncouth assumptions of a supernatural boor. A short tale of mummies, werewolves, and well-preserved felines set in this Parasol Protectorate prequel!
